The function of a wire is to carry electric current — or a signal — safely from one point to another. A wire is a strand (or bundle of strands) of a highly conductive metal that allows electric current to flow along it. Its core function is conduction — providing a low-resistance path so electricity can travel from the source to the point of use with as little loss and heat as possible. The purpose of wires in an electrical system

Across a building or a device, wires serve three connected purposes:

  1. Electrical transmission — carrying power from the supply to lights, sockets, appliances and machinery. This is the role of house wires and power cables.
  2. Signal transmission — carrying data and communication signals for networking, CCTV, telephony and audio. This is the role of communication cables such as LAN, CATV and coaxial.
  3. Connection and interconnection — joining the components of a system so they work together, from a single appliance to a whole distribution board.

What wires are made of

Conductors are chosen for conductivity, durability and cost. Copper is the default: it conducts better, flexes more and lasts longer. Aluminium is lighter and more economical for larger power-distribution sizes — see copper vs aluminium conductors. Around the conductor sits the insulation — commonly PVC, and increasingly low-smoke, halogen-free compounds such as HR-FR-LSH and HFFR, some cross-linked by e-beam (electron-beam) technology for higher heat resistance and durability.

How wires carry current safely

Wires carry current from the supply to each load, sized so they can do so without overheating and graded so they stay safe under fault and fire. Three things decide this:

  • Conductor size — a larger cross-section carries more current. Match it to the load and run length (the calculator helps).
  • Insulation grade — heat-resistant and flame-retardant grades keep the wire safe as it warms and in a fire. In occupied spaces, prefer low-smoke HR-FR-LSH or halogen-free wire.

How to choose the right wire

Start with the job: the load current and run length set the conductor size; the environment (heat, moisture, fire risk) sets the insulation grade; and the signal type decides whether you need power, data or coaxial cable.
