Multicore Cable Buying Guide: How to Choose

A multicore cable carries several insulated conductors inside one sheath, so a single run can power a motor, appliance or control circuit with all the cores it needs. Choosing the right one comes down to three questions: round or flat, copper or aluminium, and PVC or XLPO insulation.

Round vs flat

Flat multicore cables are the standard choice for submersible pump motors — the flat profile runs neatly down a borewell alongside the pipe. Round multicore cables suit general wiring for appliances, motors and control panels where the cable is routed through conduit or trays.

Copper vs aluminium

Copper conducts better and is more durable and flexible, making it the default for most circuits. Aluminium (the AlumShakti range) is lighter and more economical, a sensible choice for larger power-distribution runs where a bigger conductor size offsets its higher resistance.

PVC vs XLPO insulation

FR-PVC (Shakti and AlumShakti) is flame-retardant and dependable for everyday use. XLPO — cross-linked polyolefin, used in the premium Mahashakti range — is fire-retardant and self-extinguishing, withstands higher temperatures and emits less smoke, for installations where fire safety is a priority.

Multicore cable FAQs

Which multicore cable is best for a submersible pump?

A flat multicore cable — Shakti Flat (copper), AlumShakti Flat (aluminium) or Mahashakti Flat (premium XLPO) — because the flat profile is designed to run down a borewell beside the pump and resist water ingress.

What is the difference between round and flat multicore cable?

Only the shape and its typical use. Flat cables suit submersible pumps and tight runs; round cables suit general appliance, motor and control wiring.

Copper or aluminium multicore — which should I choose?

Copper for most circuits (better conductivity, durability and flex); aluminium for economical larger-size power distribution. See copper vs aluminium.
