A rooftop solar installation uses more than one type of cable, because the DC side and the AC side face different demands.
On the DC side — from the panels to the inverter — you need dedicated solar (PV) cables rated for UV, heat and weather, because this wiring is exposed on the roof for the life of the system. Ordinary indoor house wire must not be used here; outdoor and rooftop runs need cable built for those conditions. On the AC side — from the inverter to the distribution board and grid — appropriately rated power cables or house wires are used, sized to the inverter output, along with proper earthing and protection.
Correct sizing matters throughout: cable has to handle the system current with acceptable voltage drop, which depends on the run length and the current-carrying capacity for the installation. A solar system designer or licensed electrician should specify the exact types and sizes.
