What is an armoured cable?

Quick answer

An armoured cable has a layer of metal armour — usually steel wire (SWA) or steel tape (STA) — built in beneath the outer sheath. The armour gives mechanical protection, shielding the insulated conductors from crushing, impact and damage, and can also serve as an earth path.

This protection makes armoured cable the standard choice where cables face physical stress or are exposed: direct burial underground, industrial floors, external runs and cable trenches. For exposed and buried installations it is usually paired with moisture-resistant XLPE insulation — see why outdoor and underground runs need special cables.

Armoured power cables are a specialised category supplied by APAR Industries for utility, infrastructure and industrial projects. To discuss an armoured-cable requirement, contact the APAR team.
