Round vs flat multicore cable: how to decide

For most fixed wiring and conduit runs, a round multicore cable is the comfortable default. Its symmetrical shape pulls easily through conduit, dissipates heat evenly and resists crushing, which is why it suits the bulk of building and machine wiring.

A flat multicore cable earns its place where space is tight or the cable must lie flat against a surface — submersible pump risers and lift travelling cables are classic examples. The flat profile saves room and follows the surface without bulky bends. In short: pick round for general routing and mechanical protection, and flat where the installation is space-constrained or the application specifically calls for it.
