Is a covered conductor safe to touch?

Quick answer

No. A covered conductor must always be treated as a live bare conductor. The covering is there to cope with brief, accidental contact from branches, animals and neighbouring phases. It is not rated or tested as protection against deliberate human contact, and its surface can be damaged, wet or contaminated.

Line crews should use the same isolation, proving dead and earthing steps they would apply to bare overhead lines. Members of the public should keep clear of any overhead line, covered or not. Details of the APAR covered conductor range are on the product page.
