What is the maximum length of an Ethernet (LAN) cable run?

Quick answer

The maximum length of a twisted-pair Ethernet (LAN) channel is 100 metres. Structured cabling standards divide this as a permanent link of up to 90 metres between the wall outlet and the patch panel, plus up to 10 metres in total for the patch cords at both ends.

The same 100 metre figure applies to Cat5e and Cat6 for Gigabit Ethernet. Faster speeds can reduce the reach on lower categories. For example, 10 Gigabit Ethernet over Cat6 is limited to a shorter distance than over Cat6A.

Going past 100 metres causes signal loss and errors. For longer runs, use a network switch or media converter partway, or run fibre optic cable instead. APAR Tarang Shakti LAN cable is a Cat 6 UTP cable with 24 AWG solid copper conductors, designed for a 90 metre permanent link within the 100 metre channel.
