A jointing kit contains everything needed to join two lengths of power cable so the joint performs like the cable itself: connectors or ferrules for the conductors, insulating layers (usually heat-shrink or cold-shrink), and materials to restore the screen, armour continuity and outer sheath. Joints exist because cable comes in finite drum lengths, and because repairs happen. They're also the most common weak point in a buried run — a joint made in a hurry, in a wet pit, by an untrained hand, is where many cable faults begin. Good practice is simple to state: use a kit matched to the exact cable construction and voltage, follow the kit instructions to the letter, and keep the work dry. Where a route can be supplied in one drum length, no joint is the best joint.
