Monsoon Wiring Safety Checklist for Indian Homes

Ten checks for the wet months, from the RCCB test button to the joint on the balcony.

Every monsoon, the same electrical stories repeat across Indian cities: shocks off damp walls, burnt switchboards behind seepage patches, and RCCBs blamed for doing their job. Most of it is preventable with an hour of attention. Work down this list.

1. Press the RCCB test button. The residual current device on your board has a marked test button; pressing it should trip the switch instantly. If it doesn’t trip, call an electrician now, not after the rains. Test monthly through the season.

2. Treat repeated tripping as information. An RCCB that trips when walls are wet is detecting leakage current — usually moisture reaching old insulation or a concealed joint. Resetting it repeatedly without finding the cause defeats the one device standing between a damp wall and a shock.

3. Look at the seepage patches. Any damp patch on a wall that carries concealed wiring or sits behind a switchboard deserves attention. Fix the leak first; then have the wiring in that stretch checked rather than assumed fine.

4. Get outdoor joints into weatherproof boxes. The taped joint feeding the balcony light or the gate pump is the monsoon’s favourite fault. Every outdoor connection belongs inside a weatherproof junction box with proper cable entries.

5. Dry hands, dry feet. Old advice because it’s correct: don’t operate switches with wet hands, and keep extension boards off wet floors entirely.

7. Respect waterlogged areas. If water has entered a meter room, a cellar with a distribution board, or a ground-floor room with sockets near floor level, keep clear and have the supply isolated before anyone wades in.

8. After flooding, inspect before re-energising. Wiring, sockets and boards that have been submerged shouldn’t simply be switched back on once dry to the touch. Moisture stays inside fittings and insulation longer than it stays on surfaces.

9. Mind the geyser-and-AC season handover. Monsoon humidity keeps ACs running while the first cold snaps bring geysers back. Warm switch plates or a burning smell at the board are a call to the electrician, not a quirk.
