Quick answer
For a home being wired today, a sensible specification is:
- Grade: HR-FR-LSH or HFFR, from a BIS-certified manufacturer
- Lighting circuits: 1.5 sq mm
- General power points: 2.5 sq mm
- Geyser, small AC: 4 sq mm
- Large AC, EV charger: 6 sq mm
Two points worth planning for. First, size against the load you will actually have, not the one you have today — EV chargers, inverter ACs and induction cooking all arrived after most Indian homes were wired. Second, use the correct current column from the datasheet: a wire in conduit carries less than the same wire clipped to a surface.
Slightly oversizing key circuits now is far cheaper than rewiring later.
