A good speaker cable does one job well: it carries the amplifier’s signal to the speaker with as little loss as possible. For short runs in a typical room a 1.5 sq mm (about 16 AWG) conductor is plenty; for longer runs or higher power, step up to 2.5 sq mm (around 14 AWG) to keep resistance low and the sound clean.
