What is an optical fibre cable (OFC)?

Quick answer

An optical fibre cable (OFC) carries information as pulses of light travelling through hair-thin strands of ultra-pure glass, rather than as electrical current through metal conductors.

This gives it major advantages for communication: enormous bandwidth, very low signal loss over long distances, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and light weight. It is the backbone of broadband internet, telecom networks, and high-speed links inside data centres — see also how it compares with copper-based cables.

Optical fibre is a specialised, high-technology product; APAR Industries operates optical-fibre manufacturing for telecom and networking applications. APAR's communication (Tarang Shakti) cables cover copper data cabling such as LAN and CATV. To discuss optical-fibre requirements, contact APAR.
