Which cables are used for wind energy?

Quick answer

Wind turbines place unusual demands on cable. Inside the nacelle and the twisting tower loop, cables must endure constant movement and torsion, wide temperature swings, vibration and weather — for decades — while carrying significant power.

This calls for specialised flexible windmill cables, typically using finely stranded conductors and tough, flexible elastomeric or cross-linked insulation for fatigue, heat and weather resistance. Such cables are made in ratings spanning low voltage up to medium/high voltage for the turbine and its grid connection.

APAR Industries is a leading supplier of cables to the wind-energy sector, with flexible windmill cables (available up to 72 kV) built to applicable global standards. To discuss wind-energy cable requirements, contact the APAR team.
