What FR, FRLS and HFFR actually mean

These acronyms describe how a wire’s insulation behaves when it meets fire — and how much collateral harm it causes while doing so.

FR — Flame Retardant

FR wires are designed to slow the spread of flame; the insulation is self-extinguishing, so a fire will not sustain itself once the ignition source is removed. HFFR — Halogen-Free Flame Retardant

HFFR is the top tier. The insulation contains zero halogen, so even under intense fire it releases almost no corrosive acid gas (≤0.5%, versus roughly 20% for standard FR) and minimal smoke (≤10% density, versus 60–75% for FR/FRLS).
